Packwood family

ORIGINS OF THE PACKWOOD SURNAME

The surname Packwood probably originates from the village of the same name in Warwickshire. The National Trust owns a fine Elizabethan mansion in the parish called Packwood House. However at some time in the past, a members of the family migrated to Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire. In 17th century there is evidence of branches at Hardingstone and Cottesbrooke in Northamptonshire and Dean in Bedfordshire.

PACKWOOD – GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION 1881

Here is a simple map showing the location of some of the places where Packwoods were born as recorded in the 1881 census.

What is surprising is that so few at this time seem to originate from the area around Packwood in Warwickshire. The two main clusters are in Worcestershire and the Northamptonshire / Bedfordshire border.
